Ein lautes Brüllen, schwere Schritte, die die Erde erschüttern lassen: Roland Emmerich´s "Godzilla" (1996), eine nach französischen Atomversuchen zum Monster mutierte Echse, hält Einzug in New York - und hinterläßt eine Spur unvorstellbarer Verwüstung. Das Militär ist machtlos gegen die Urgewalt des übermächtigen Gegners: Selbst Raketen perlen an Godzilla ab wie Wassertropfen. Während die unverzagte Schlacht gegen die todbringende Kreatur immer wütender entbrennt, machen der Biologe Dr. Niko "Nick" Tatopoulos (Matthew Broderick) und der französische Geheimagent Philippe Roaché (Jean Reno, u.a. "Im Rausch der Tiefe" und "Léon - Der Profi") die furchterregende Entdeckung, daß Godzilla Manhattan nicht zufällig angesteuert hat. Hinter seiner Wut lauert, eine viel größere Gefahr. Eine Gefahr, die das Ende der Welt bedeutet, wenn nicht sofort gehandelt wird...
Roland Emmerich (u.a. "Independence Day") musste für seine Version der japanischen Monsterfilme derbe Kritiken von allen Seiten einstecken...
RZ Online: "Emmerich und Devlin beweisen mit ihrem "Godzilla", daß sie das Publikum ebenso verachten wie jene fernöstliche Mythengestalt, die der ganzen Welt gehört."

Angeblich sind Dean Devlin und Roland Emmerich - aufgrund kreativer Differenzen - nicht länger in "Godzilla 2" involviert... Und: Sony will angeblich keine überteuerte "Monster VS. Monster"-Story verfilmen...

Bei IGN FilmForce gibt es ein Interview mit Dean Devlin...
[...] when we made Godzilla, we broke ground effects-wise. We did things that had never been done before - and some things that still haven't been duplicated. Yet, when people talk about great effects in movies, no one ever talks about Godzilla... and believe me, it's not the quality of the effects - it's really because you aren't involved, so the effects didn't have the impact on you. That ending sequence in Godzilla when he's walking on the bridge - that's a completely digitally created bridge, digital brick, digital creature, the wires are digital, digital planes - it was an amazing breakthrough and no one had ever done anything like that before - yet people don't really talk about it. The bottom line is that we had not earned the love of that character at that moment. Had we... Had I - I'll take full responsibility - had I done a better job in writing the script, I think we'd still be talking about Godzilla today. [...]

[...] "The worst part of GODZILLA was the script, and I take the responsibility for it because I wrote the script with Roland [Emmerich]... It was the first time we ever developed a script at a studio. I am not saying the studio ruined it in development, but I think that the atmosphere of us trying to please them and us trying to deliver what we thought they wanted rather than going off to make the movie we wanted really hurt the script. I am still very proud of the production, what Roland did as a director and even the special effects, which we’ve taken a lot of heat for, but we broke ground and did stuff that had never been done before with the FX."
