Film "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" war für den 7.

"The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" will have to sail without Disney.
While declining to elaborate, Disney and Walden Media confirmed Tuesday that for budgetary and logistical reasons the Burbank-based studio is not exercising its option to co-produce and co-finance the next "Narnia" movie with Walden.
The third entry in the series, based on the classic books by C.S. Lewis, was in preproduction and set for a spring shoot for a planned May 2010 release. The development puts the participation of the talent attached in doubt. Michael Apted was on board to direct a script by Steven Knight. The key players of the second installment, "Prince Caspian" -- Ben Barnes, Georgie Henley, William Moseley and Anna Popplewell -- were to return for the third film.
Walden has a strong relationship with the Lewis estate and will shop "Treader" in hopes of finding a new partner. The most likely candidate at this stage is Fox, which markets and distributes Walden fare under the Fox Walden banner.
Any partnership on a "Narnia" movie will require a substantial investment. "Caspian," which filmed in the Czech Republic, Mexico and New Zealand, cost $200 million. The first film, "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," was shot mostly in New Zealand for $180 million.
It is rare for a studio to pull out of a planned trilogy in midstream, but the number-crunching showed a franchise on a downward trend. "Lion" roared to $292 million domestically and another $453 million internationally in 2005. This year, "Prince Caspian" grossed a healthy $141 million in North America and another $278 million internationally, but that was well off the "Lion" take.
Further challenging "Treader" may be a waning of the pricey children's fantasy genre. When the "Harry Potter" series topped the book charts and then filled movie theaters, studios began snapping up fantasy manuscripts as quickly as they could. When "The Lord of the Rings" showed it was possible for adults to enjoy the fare as well -- and produced the boxoffice results to prove it -- Hollywood's fascination with the genre intensified.
But no other fantasy adventure films have shown that kind of boxoffice punch. Earlier this year, Warners and New Line hoped they were launching a franchise with "The Golden Compass," but the adaptation of the Philip Pullman trilogy tanked domestically.
The film grossed just $70 million domestically and the co-production partners declined to go forward with a second installment despite the fact the film did take in more than $300 million overseas.

[15.11.2008] CS! meldet...
On Friday, Walden Media announced that Co-CEO and co-founder Cary Granat was exiting the company. One thing we noticed in the press release, however, was that The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader has not yet gotten the green light:
Cary Granat, Co-CEO and co-founder of Walden Media, will transition from his Walden position to a consultant for the company effective December 1. Granat will be Walden's creative consultant on the third installment in "The Chronicles of Narnia" franchise - "Voyage of the Dawn Treader"- which the company hopes to greenlight soon. He will also provide consulting services for an initiative with AEG Live, the concert and promotion company owned by Phil Anschutz who also owns Walden.
"This was a mutual decision," said David Weil, CEO of Anschutz Film Group, Walden’s parent company. "Cary and we both felt this was the right way to formalize the change in the company's creative direction that will now be overseen by Michael Bostick who was brought in as Co-CEO of Walden earlier this year. We all owe Cary a great debt of gratitude for co-founding the company and guiding the Walden brand to its preeminent place in family entertainment today."
"I'm extremely proud of what we've accomplished in my seven years at Walden. We have been very fortunate, with the unparalleled support of Phil Anschutz, David Weil and the entire team here to create family entertainment that will last for generations. It's time for me to hit the recharge button and take on a new challenge, but I'll always look back fondly on my time at Walden."
Granat will not be replaced and his responsibilities at Walden will now be handled by Weil and Bostick. Granat expects to announce additional future plans shortly.
Disney was targeting a May 7, 2010 release date for the third installment.

Will Poulter, who has been cast as pain-in-the-butt Eustace Scrubb, the Pevensie children's cousin, in the next Narnia adventure to go before the cameras - The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader - which Michael Apted will direct.
Awful things happen to Eustace in this tale, but he learns. Will played Lee Carter, the scamp schoolboy in the film Son Of Rambow.
In fact, when I interviewed Will a few months ago I thought he'd be one holy terror, but he's a very likeable 14-year-old Londoner, and I was struck by his perfect manners.
In Voyage Of The Dawn Treader he'll join Ben Barnes, as Prince Caspian, and Skandar Keynes and Georgie Henley, as Edmund and Lucy. Peter and Susan don't feature in this story - at least not in the one C.S Lewis wrote. [...]

[09.06.2008] THR.com berichtet über die Einspielergebnisse...
[...] Buoyed by No. 1 openings in eight territories, "Caspian" bounced up 12% from last weekend, recording $20.3 million from about 5,500 screens in 28 markets and hiking its international gross total past the $100 million mark to $102.2 million.
The biggest of the debuts was Australia, where the tally was $3.8 million from 265 sites for a lusty $14,340 per-screen average. "Caspian's" China bow provided $3.2 million from 500 screens, 40% more than the comparable gross in the market for 2005's "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe."
"Caspian," which so far has not played in major European markets, has rolled up a worldwide total of $227 million. [..]

[29.05.2008] THR.com meldet...
Disney CEO Robert Iger said Wednesday that "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" isn't performing as well as expected because its May 16 release date was too competitive.
It's an interesting thesis, considering Disney purposely moved the film to that date and, in doing so, turned the seemingly natural Christmas franchise -- the first installment featured a cameo from Santa Claus -- into a springtime experience.
Disney originally had "Caspian" set for the 2007 Christmas season but made the change in deference to "The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep," a fantasy vying for the same audience.
Disney might also have been taking into account the feelings of Walden Media, its production partner on "Narnia" and the production company behind "Water Horse," which was distributed by Sony. That film earned $102.6 million worldwide at the boxoffice.
"The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" scored $744.8 million worldwide as a Christmas release in 2006.
Iger, speaking at the Bernstein Strategic Decisions Conference in New York, said "Prince Caspian" is a better movie than the first installment but because it was released between a couple of the year's biggest hits, audiences are overlooking it.
"Prince Caspian" was released May 16, less than two weeks after "Iron Man" and just six days before "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." It has grossed $151 million worldwide so far.
Iger lamented the "very delicate, very fragile marketplace" for movies in general, given that "there's just too much out there."
As of now, the next movie in the "Narnia" series is set for release May 7, 2010.

They won't necessarily be returning to Andrew Adamson's home country for the third movie though as Johnson told us that they'd be shooting two-thirds of the movie in Rosarito, Mexico at a huge water tank where James Cameron shot Titanic and where they shot Master and Commander. They say that the rest of the production could be in any number of difference places, which they'll figure out once they've finished scouting locations. [...]

[05.04.2008] Quint von AICN hatte die Möglichkeit rund 45 Minuten aus dem Sequel zu begutachten...
[...] I liked the tone and the more challenging ideas floated in the story. I like that there are real, heavy consequences to the decisions the kids make. The little boy in me loves seeing these young teens and CG creatures wantonly killing hundreds of soldiers. Only in a fantasy movie can kids kill adults and it still be perfectly okay. I liked the look of the creatures, who were more detailed and natural looking, specifically the minotaurs. The Dink is also awesome, adding a real level of class to the film. He definitely doesn’t phone in his performance and his cynical smart-ass character is a good addition to the sickly-sweet world of Narnia.
The only real drawback I got from the footage was the lack of growth in the acting in the Pevensies and the standard performance from Ben Barnes as Caspian. They all have a natural charisma, so it’s not painful, but I did notice some weak performances in the footage. Maybe it’ll smooth out in context in the final product.
Fans of the first one will like this flick, I think, and it’ll also earn new fans thanks to its more adult content and better level of effects quality. [...]

[...] From what I've heard, studio suits seem to be cooling to the idea of producing movie versions of all seven of C.S. Lewis's "Narnia" books. And unless "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" does truly huge box office once it's released to theaters in May of this year ... Disney & Walden Media (i.e. Mickey's partner on the "Narnia" film series) will probably still go forward with production of the already-in-development "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader." But after that ... The Mouse would then mostly likely pull the plug on the rest of the proposed "Narnia" film series. [...]

[...] These filmmakers were already deep into the prep for the next film, already cutting sequences as they shot, always moving towards the next set-up. It seems to me that they are in the NARNIA business in a big way, and that they have a very strong idea of how they want these films to look and feel. That’s got to be encouraging for fans of the novels.
Me, I’m just happy to see that they didn’t decide to imitate the first film ad infinitum, but that they are instead dedicated to pushing themselves and trying to make each film special and different. [...]

[...] Weta is doing miniature and VFX work as well as a VFX company in London.
VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER is already moving forward and they’ll do all 7 books if the Box Office stays strong.
The footage they showed had no dialog, only music over images. There were some really incomplete effects, ranging from animatic Reepicheep slashing bad guys and tying up cats to green-legged centaurs. There was also part of the mano-a-mano sword fight between Peter and King Miraz, the evil ruler of the Telmarines who have taken over Narnia while the Pevensies have been away (one year passes for them and it’s well over a thousand years in Narnia).
I’ll have much more detail on this next week... I was shown at least 45 minutes of the movie, so I’ll be able to spill a bit more then. I’ll just say that I wasn’t that keen on the first NARNIA, but this one has a darkness to it that I quite enjoy. I like that Berger, Andrew Adamson and co. have made the world feel a little more used and lived in. [...]

[...] Hopes are highest for "Prince Caspian," which will cost at least $100 million. Granat promises that the battle-filled sequel is easily distinguishable from its predecessor and the third pic on the sked, "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader."
Walden and Disney recently shifted the release date for "Dawn Treader" from 2009 to 2010 due to the schedules of the young actors. The shift will also avoid a conflict of having to promote the second film and shoot the third at the same time.
Producers had announced at Comic-Con in July that auds could expect one "Narnia" installment each May for the next few years. Granat is committing publicly to only four or five, saying that "Silver Chair" might be the best bet for the fourth, followed by "Magician's Nephew," but he admits that there are a multitude of possibilities.
"There are a lot of stories to be taken from the seven books," he notes. [...]
